Before you bring the drive in
The more you try to fix the device, the greater the chance you are causing more damage.
Stop using it
Power the drive off and leave it off. Repeated power cycles on a failing drive turn cheap recoveries into expensive ones.
Don’t open it
This is especially true if you try and open up your hard drive, as this can make data recovery impossible.
Don’t run recovery software
Consumer tools write to the drive while they scan. On a drive with bad sectors that makes things worse.
Bring the enclosure
If it’s a portable drive, bring the case and the power adapter. Faulty adapters are the most common cause of failed electronics.
