Firmware Corruption

Your hard drive failure may not be physical. If the firmware is corrupt, the drive will fail even if its electronic and mechanical components are fully functional.

What firmware is

Think of it as the drive’s operating system

Your computer

The Operating System allows your computer to run a certain application. Without it, the hardware sits there doing nothing useful.

Your hard drive

A hard disc drive contains a set of service data, called firmware, that controls its hardware and is vital for its proper functioning. It allows all parts of a hard drive to operate smoothly and provides access to disc contents.

How to spot it

Common symptoms of firmware corruption

01

If the hard drive cannot read the service area modules, this can result in a clicking noise.

02

The hard drive spins up, no clicking, but cannot be detected by your computer.

03

The hard drive spins up, no clicking, but is shown to have 0GB capacity.

04

The hard drive spins up but cannot read your data.

Two places

Where the firmware actually lives

The System Area

Firmware codes are located in the system area on the data platters themselves — a reserved region you never see as a user, holding dozens of service modules.

The ROM on the PCB

The rest sits in the ROM (Read-Only Memory) of the PCB (Printed Circuit Board), which is why a board swap alone rarely works without transferring the original chip.

This is the important part: if the firmware is corrupt, the drive will fail even if its electronic and mechanical components are fully functional. Nothing is broken — the drive simply cannot find its own instructions.

Repair needs specialised tools

To repair firmware problems, specialised tools are required to access and modify the System Area. There is no consumer software that can do this — the drive has to be spoken to directly.

Here at dig IT we use the Dolphin Data Labs FRP tools to perform these repairs and diagnosis of hard drive problems. The Firmware Repair Tools include fixes for common firmware problems.

Seagate Terminal Mode

Talking to the drive directly

Seagate drives have a Terminal Mode which allows the firmware repair tool to initiate commands directly to the firmware of the drive. In terminal mode the drive also displays errors that have occurred during its spin-up sequence.

Diagnostic output

Common Seagate terminal errors

If you have connected a drive in terminal mode and it printed one of these, this is what it means.

Seagate terminal · spin-up sequence
  • Failed to load overlay 00000004Usually associated with some hardware error and can be caused by non-native adaptives, i.e. a non-original ROM.
  • SIM error 1002Alerts us to some error with one or more defect list. Potentially P-list or NRG list can be bad.
  • SIM error 2044Translator tables cannot be read or are damaged.
  • SIM error 1009Module 17A is damaged.
  • SIM Error 203F
    SIM Error 2040
    SIM Error 3005
Also seem to be damaged or unreadable translator related errors.
  • LED:00000047
    FAddr:FFFFFFFE
Usually this relates to Media Cache.
  • LED:000000BC
    FAddr:00006220
Usually this also relates to Media Cache or some relocation parameters.
  • SIM ERROR 3005Means that the “format corrupted flag” is on and the Translator is not loaded in RAM.
  • No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlagsA reason message explaining why the translator is not loaded.
